Indiana is one of the greatest agricultural centers in not only America, but the world. In part because of its largely rural population, Indiana centralized many licenses and regulatory functions at the state level. Entrepreneurs can expect to get most of their licenses and permits through various state agencies and enjoy relatively little regulation at the local level.
In Indiana, any business that serves food can endanger public health. That’s why restaurants are some of the most regulated businesses out there. Multiple state, county and city environmental health permits are common for restaurants. Those that serve alcohol need even more licensing. Prospective restaurateurs should expect to apply for at least five licenses and permits and in many cases much more.
