The only state in the Union with Napoleonic Code and parishes instead of counties has always been a little different thanks to its French roots. However, today's Louisiana has similar business licenses and permits to other states. In fact, it regulates significantly at the state level while even New Orleans, its largest city, remains light on licenses and permits.
In Louisiana, retail businesses of all sorts including toy stores, clothing shops, photography businesses and general merchandisers need licenses and permits. In most cases, retail businesses take relatively few licenses – however being registered for all state and local taxes is important as is having any needed general business licenses.
