The Garden State is one of America's most industrial and well populated states. From its northern "gateway" area whose economy is tied in with New York City to southern seaside suburbs, New Jersey has a diverse economy, people and landscape. Although much of its substantial population doesn't live in large cities, New Jersey remains an important state for business.
In New Jersey, specialty food shops such as spice, cheese and gourmet shops need retail food licenses. Depending on the state, county and city, these can amount to up to eight different licenses and permits. Retailers must also submit retail food plans and adhere to environmental health regulations in order to stay in business.
